Relieve Hell's Itch in 15 Minutes

If you are currently suffering from Hell's Itch (An intense, uncontrollable, stabbing sunburn itch) also called Devil's Itch and Suicide Itch here is the short version of how to find relief quickly. If you'd like to read my story scroll below!

How to Relieve Itching Fast:

  1. Cool the affected area with a dripping wet towel
    1. re-wet the towel as needed. As long as the towel is in contact with the skin, the itch should be tolerable.
  2. Antihistamines
    1. This is the most important step to finding relief. Most people recommend Benodryl but the generic Kroger brand non-drowsy 24 hr allergy relief worked wonders for me. Hell's itch acts as an allergic reaction so antihistamines will work.
  3. Ibuprofen
    1.  Taking some ibuprofen such as Advil should help reduce swelling, lower your skin temperature, and reduce some of the pain. If you have some stronger pain meds go ahead with those but if possible take ibuprofen as well to help with swelling and temperature.
  4. Test Removing the Towel
    1. Try removing the towel for short periods of time to see if the antihistamines and ibuprofen have taken effect. If you have waited for an extended period of time and the itch has not became tolerable go on to step 5.
  5. Hot Shower (Last Resort)
    1. If none of the above have helped, a hot shower should. A hot shower seems to be counterintuitive since a sunburn caused the itch in the first place. However, a hot, painful, shower will activate pain nerve endings while your brain will ignore the itch. Obviously a hot shower will be painful and certainly wont help your sunburn heal so it should be a last resort.
  6. Take Vitamins
    1. Taking some multivitamins will help boost your immune system and help your body heal your itch quicker
  7. Stay Hydrated
    1. Always be drinking water. If your urine isn't clear or close to it you are not drinking enough water.
Important Notes:
  1. DO NOT USE ALOE
    1. Aloe absolutely will not help, it will actually hurt!! This itch forms deep within the skin, not at the surface so aloe will not help. Often aloe will inhibit the antihistamines from doing their job so if you did apply aloe I recommend trying to wash it off.
    2. Avoid all lotions besides A&D lotion (Diaper Rash lotion), Calamine lotion, and peppermint oil. All of these lotion are reported to help. Below are some product available on amazon which are effective at killing the Itch.
  2. DO NOT ITCH!!!!
    1. Whatever you do, do not itch your skin. The hell's itch will subside for a second before coming back stronger by a magnitude of ten.
    2. I found using a fan on the affected area can calm the itch without scratching.
  3. Avoid Bathing
    1. Many people (myself included) trigger their intitial itch by taking a shower. If possible, avoid taking a shower 2-3 days after you start experiencing the Itch
My Story:

I'm a college student and my university is in the Upper Peninsula (UP) of Michigan. If you are familiar with the state of Michigan you will know that the UP is a very cold place in the winter with lots of snow and little sun. I strongly believe this played a large role in the development of my Hell's Itch, an ailment I had never heard of before it was too late. A weekend in mid June 2016, I decided to head downstate to the lower peninsula to visit my girlfriend and friends. On Friday, we went out to the beach for about 2.5 hours. I stupidly did not apply any sunscreen. I suffered a sunburn, however I didn't think much of as I normally don't wear sunscreen and I have suffered worse sunburns  than this. On Sunday I spent a fun 9 hours being burnt in the car before I making it back to school. All is fine and well up to this point as I doze off for a good night of sleep before class. I get up Monday morning (48 hours after the initial burn) and hop into the shower as I always do prior to class. When I stepped out of the shower and dried off, it happened. An deep itch spread across my chest getting more and more painful by the second. Thrown off by this strange and terrible sensation, I decided to apply some medicated aloe with lidocaine. Bad move. My chest is set ablaze, I'm trying my very hardest not to itch my skin as I assumed this would only make it worse. I jump back into the shower to rinse off this terrible aloe, thinking it was wholly responsible for the itch. Once again, I get out of the shower hoping the terrible itch is gone. To my anguish I was wrong. I starting jumping up and down, curling into a ball, and running around the house hoping to distract myself until the itch subsides as I still have to make it to class. The relief never came. However, I remembered the itch was tolerable in the shower, so I soaked a towel and placed it on my chest. That seemed to help. With this soaking wet towel on me, I jumped on the internet. Following the advise on the sites I found, I rummaged through my medicine cabinet and found a 24hr allergy relief medicine (Thanks mom) and ibuprofen. I popped those on an empty stomach and thankfully they kicked in quickly. Within 15 minutes I was able to remove the towel entirely and lay in bed with only minor tingling in my chest. It was still a bit annoying but still far better than 15 minutes previous. I laid in bed, emailed my professors I couldn't make it to class, and waited for the Itch to come back in full force. Thankfully, it didn't. Sometimes I'd be tempted to itch at the tingles but I quickly found that to be a bad idea. Alternatively, I used a small fan aimed at my chest, as the sensation of air flowing over my skin seemed to tame the tingles. The tingles lasted about a day and a half longer. I made sure I took more allergy medicine every 24 hours and I didn't shower for 2 days. Now, about 5 days later, the tingles are gone, I just have a bit of a tan and some peely skin. I survived, so can you!

    4. I have just experienced the worst pain i have ever had in my entire life. Literally i felt like i was going insane and about to loose my mind. The hells itch struck me 48 hrs after a sunburn from a day at the beach.i began to itch slowly so i figured i was in the healing peeling process so i put on some lotion and all of a sudden it literally felt like someone opened my chest and dumped a bucket of fire ants in there and closed me up and they went wild and began to bite me all over my chest, stomach and shoulders and they wouldn't stop. At one point it dropped me to my knees and i almost cried in agony. True story. I started reading stories on the internet and finally took some benadryl some spray and after about an hour and a half the pain subsided a little.enough to function without twitching and squirming all over trying to find some relief. It was horrible and i wish that upon no one. It is the next day and still have minor symptoms but nothing like yesterday. The hells itch is a perfect name for it and it is real and i feel bad for you if you are reading this and if you are going through it because i know i was a victim of it. JSon

    5. I've had hell's itch 4 times.. I've learned to cover up in a thick blanket with pants and a jacket on and lay down until the antihistamine kicks in... If your skin gets wind or cool air to it, it will only make it worse.

    6. Only thing that worked for me was extremely hot shower. Definitely not my last go to now. Will always be 1st if I ever experience anything so exasperating that I would just as soon be dead. Praise be the HOT shower.

    8. Just wanted to thank you all so much for this post. The last 48 hours have been pure hell. At first I thought it was just a bad itch so tried aloe, coconut oil, lotion. Which I'm all washed off very soon made it so much worse. So like much of you I figured out a hot shower or bath was the only way to keep the itch at Bay. So out of 48 hours I'll probably been in the bathtub or shower for 20 or so. I think it's finally deciding to ease up some thank you everyone for your advice! Let's never get this shit again oh, misery.

  2. I recently took a trip to Vietnam over winter break to visit some family. As you may know, Vietnam is near the equator and has average temperatures of 90 degrees everyday. I also stupidly did not apply sunscreen. I had never experienced the pain of hell's itch before and your blog really helped me out. Thanks for sharing!

  3. OMG, I know exactly what u are talking about. I've had it twice. The first time was me being stupid and falling asleep with baby oil on my chest for about an hour at an apartment complex pool. The hell's itch was right in the crevice of my chest. Unbelievable pain (literally). The second time I had it was in San Diego at a pool, but I didn't think it would be so bad b/c I hadn't put baby oil on. Boy, was I wrong. It was a decent pink (not blistered), but about 2 days after the burn the hell's itch was on my back and shoulders. I didn't know of any remedies, but I had to think of something, so I took a freezing cold shower, but that didn't work. I felt it better with the water getting hotter, and just soaked with steaming hot water in the bath at the hotel. Pain gone. Until I got back in bed. The next day I had to fly back to Louisiana (3 hr trip of slapping the agonizing itches). All the while my sister and brother-in-law were betting to see how many times I would mention my pain; laughing about it.

  4. hot showers work !!!!
I ve managed to ruin my vacation and make my husband' s life miserable .....
At some point i was even tempted to try cocaine, as we are in the Dominican Republic, and it s being offered to us by passing strangers a few times a day. Wnd let me just mention that i have Never tried any kind of drugs .... it s not for me .
But today.... oh boy.... i would have tried anything!!!
Luckily, i googled this quicky, and i also read some of the stories to my husband, just so he knows the hell i go through, and the first thing available to me, since i m in the resort, out of town , was the HOT SHOWER.
It absolutely works !!!! The itch is gone about 90%.... what a relief ....
We ll see how long it lasts ...
Today was my first day of hell, but knowing i can manage my pain and burning, excruciating, hellish, killyourself itch, i feel better about tomorrow...
Hope i can get some sleep...
    Thank you for the tips

  5. TENS UNIT!! I just experienced my second hell itch, first one occurring more than fifteen years ago. My back is burnt and now day two the fire ants began to attack. I consider myself to be tuff, but this is a horrible pain. After three hot showers the attacks would come in 20 minutes or less.

Luckily I had a tens unit from a previous back injury and guess what.. It freaking works! It really does. I think it is jamming the nerves and masking the pain. So if this happens to you I believe you can get a decent tens unit at Walgreens.
    Hope this helps.

I tried aloe and lotion i finally washed it off with a hot shower and then decided to scratch the itch away then I took benudril (thanks mom) and that stoped the itching

  14. I have it now, I tought i was going mad. I had an ice bath first (which didnt help), then I had another ice bath with baking soda (which made it even worse), then a hot shower, which helped a bit but not alot, and then I got some loratadine, and hell it helped out, I hope it doesnt come back :)

  15. I found myself with this again, benedryl helped (30min after taking) for a couple hours. Occassionally it got so bad, i jumped in the shower (some hot...some cold...both seemed to help to a degree, think 'out of your mind crazy' down to 'this royally sucks').
I ended up, caving and going to the doc last night. They gave me a steroid shot...and I felt better in minutes, even slept through the night. They said it should last 12hours. This morning, i can feel it creeping back...hopefully, thats just in my head.
Out of curiosity, i took a non-drowsy allergy pill this morning.

If you're reading this...you've already read the other things to try:
    - black tea soaked cloths (tried that 24hrs post burn)
    - aloe (bad idea..don't don't don't)
    - aquaphor (would not recommend)
    - Peppermint oil (no relief...the application contact brought on another itching fit)
    - Showers (work..but for a time...good when you're absolutely losing your mind)

So for me, its benedryl and Ibprofeun...and lots of water.

  18. This is the worst thing ever!

I'm FINALLY at the end of this, and feel compelled to share with the rest of those unlucky few (allegedly 5-10% of us that will experience it). It's the beginning of summer, I didn't put on enough sunscreen and was at a pool for 3 hours. I always pan fry at the beginning of the summer so I should've known to be more cautious.

48 hours later, hell's itch (AKA suicide itch) began. The first 24 hours are the worst, but basically lasted 3 days.

I'm posting to let others know theire IS a cure! NO aloe, lotion, cream, or any other ointments. Doctors and pharmacists won't know what you're talking about and will think you're crazy.

Take a ridiculous amount of Benadryl. Max dosage to sleep and half a pill every 2 hours for as long as it takes. Take a warm/hot shower for temporary relief until the Benadryl kicks in. Do NOT try home remedies or even touch it. Everyone loves the banana boat white lotion- doesn't work for this. This is something different.

72 hours after the itch began I'm finally peeling. Peeling creates a different kind of itch, and it's bearable. It's also what he pharmacist will think you're referring to.

Benadryl + hot showers and you'll survive!

If i stay kinda sweaty hot it seems to not come. My sunburn pain is nothing compared to this itch. It has to have something to do with your body temperature returning back to normal that brings on the itch. Tgats why sfter a hot shower it comes back

  22. I got sunburnt now over 3 weeks ago and I'm still getting this itch on and off. Having a bad bad reaction at this very minute. Currently walking around my house leaning on the walls because they're slightly cold.

Just taken some allergy tablets and ibuprofen as I've seen it recommended on here. I hope to God it works!

I stumped across this post and the foil really worked until the antihistamine and ibuprofen kick in. I mm starting to feel human again but will keep taking the meds for a few days as cannot cope with another night being awake wandering around the house in so much pain!!

  24. I am a nurse. I had mild Sun burn over my entire back from this weekend- doing some gardening for a couple of hours and it was intermittent sun/clouds. I've had for worse sunburn than this. It was just over 48hrs later at 7pm I could feel an itch coming on. Off for chlophrenamine, co-codamol and possible lanacaine (to which the pharmacists said to use sudocte, obviously not knowing the nightmare I was going to endure.
Back home for 8pm, the itching is getting worse. The best description is it felt like my back was covered in hundreds of painful biting insects, but these insects don't move. One random insect would unpredictably bite, this biting sensation would be up at 80 times per minute at its worst and the only relief was to stretch a towel over my back and to rub it. It would get progressively worse if I couldnt rub it.
I was being driven to insanity. I tried to put E45 on initially, WORSTTT idea ever , this brought it on far more intensely so I frantically dumped the baby on the Mrs. Who was almost asleep so I could get a shower to get it off. Later she suggest aloe Vera, this didnt help. The pharmacist told me to take 2 chlophrenamine, I ended up taking 3 over 3 hours and 4 x co-codamol. Nothing helped apart from rubbing my back on a Towel over a cushion. The itch is debilitating, it possesses you and makes you angry, I couldn't even hold or tolerate my toddler cos I'd have to scratch.
I tried to sleep as it settled slightly, as I lay on my side it was SLIGHTLY bareable. As I turned onto my back or would set off a huge histamine response and I'd have to sit up and start rubbing my back with a blanket.
It was too unbearable, reading about the hot showers and the pain response I applied a 'deep heat rollerball to give a warming sensation. This helped. Then still unable to sleep I took 4mg of dexamethasone I had in the garage. This settled it and I went to bed, the biting sensation less painful and at 20-30 bites per/min. I woke up 2 hours later in another insane itching session, I took ibuprofen, another chlophrenamine and co codomol. I then slept for another 2 hours. At 8am, I had 4 hours sleep in total. I had to phone sick in work. The itching sensation still prevalent upon waking although not making me as frantic. I got some 1% hydrocortisone from the pharmacy, applying this made things worse for 20-30mins although did provide relief for hours after.
Now 24hours later, the itching sensation is there but manageable. I caught sunburn on my thinning part of my head last year and I had a severe itch, I hope this doesn't happen all the time I get Sunburn. I couldn't imagine a world without modern medicine to explain what causes this pathology. Devils itch, helps itch and suicide itch are all appropriate. It's NOT your typical sunburn.
Now my challenge will be to get my employer to believe me.

  25. I was at the ocean without sunscreen two days ago for about three hours. I got burnt but nothing too alarming. I've been burnt much worse before and it usually turns into a tan the next morning. The day after the beach however, it was still red. Today, after work, I began feeling a bit of an itch on my back. Applied some Aloe and the itch intensified 10 fold. Started flipping out--found lydacane pit that on-- itch increased in intensity 100 fold. Grinding my teeth, I nearly passed out after five minutes of waiting for the lydacane to start working. Couldn't handle the painful itch--hopped in a cold shower to wash this stuff of -- which I assumed was bad. It became much easier to handle after this. It's stil stabbing, itching in 5 second intervals but a lot better than before. Thought it may have been the exposure to salt water and the sun as I've never been burnt at an ocean before, just fresh water beaches. As I said, have never had this before and at one time spent pretty close to 30 days shirtless working in a remote bush camp in northern Ontario in 30 degree weather. Would love to know what caused this. If you have a clue I'd love to know.

  28. Got burned on the beach two days ago, and exactly 48 hours later the itch started. I have never experienced anything like it before in my life. Unbearable!
Im not peeling or anything and while the burn is bad (on my back), its not severe or the worst I've ever had. I started googling and found out about this hells itch. I was so relieved to know I was not going insane. Have spent the day lying on an a large gel ice pack and applying benadryl cream to my back every couple hours. I think the ice pack works in similar way to the hot shower. It creates that kind of pain you get from leaving an ice pack on too long. This is by no means a cure, but has made it just barely bearable.

  29. I'm Irish and burn just about every summer but never in my life have I had this itch. I went to the beach and used sunscreen, yet for some reason my stomach was badly burned. I was suicidal, called an ambulance to my house because I was alone and couldn't concentrate enough to drive myself to the ER. I tried warm shower, cold shower, hot shower, aloe, linocane, bacitracin, cortisone, everything. Nothing worked. They shot me with hydrocortisone and gave me prednisone by mouth at the hospital, of course the steroids worked but 8 hours later the pain came back in full force. My mom had never seen me so mad before, I was frantic and panicking. I took 3 Benadryl, at least 1200mg of ibuprofen, slathered myself in A&D and the pain eventually subsided and I was able to sleep. This is the worst pain I've ever experienced and I've broken many bones and have endometriosis. Nothing compares to this itch. I was running around my house naked and screaming looking for relief. It really really sucks. The A&D really works and I got peppermint oil as well and that did the trick too. The Benadryl helped me sleep, as my theory is that all these dead skin cells released all their histamine at once causing this itch. It is the most unbearable pain in the world and I hope no one ever gets burned like this

  30. THE BEST CURE FOR HELLS ITCH!! Reading all these descriptions of what it feels like is so pleasing. when I tried explaining it to my friends and family they just thought I was over reacting. I had a SEVERE hells itch about 2 days after I stupidly was out with no cream on, and it was pretty much my whole back that itched. I tried aloe gel, anti itch cream, cold towels, cold showers, everything you'd expect really really aggravated the itch. The hot shower worked well, the heat apparently suppresses your pores when you have an itch. So obviously I couldn't shower in work, i was going crazy, so I used HEAT! An electric heater, a hair dryer, whatver you have, and just heat your back (obviously don't set anything on fire or have too much heat you can't cope) but it worked so so wel for me. Just any time the damn thing tried to flare up again, I sat infront of an electric heater. Combined with anti-histamine tablets, it cleared up in 2 days. Moral of the story, HEAT is the only thing that worked for me with hells itch. Hope it helps

  31. My husband is currently going through hells itch after a sunburn while camping. Cold water and ice packs were his relief! We are doing Benadryl and Naproxen every four hours. Same as everyone else lotions and creams mad it much worse! We called the ER where he works and every one thought oh it's just a bad sun burn, with the usual suggestions to ease the pain. Thank God I found this post because he was really freaking me out! Glad to know what it is!!

  32. I am currently going through hells itch for the third time. Ibuprofen and Benadryl are your best bet. The stronger the meds the better obviously. Day 2 of hells itch take a hot shower. It helps with the burning in the moment but for me dried the hell out of my skin but the next day was relief because it began to peel. Just don't itch iwhayever you do! My wife thought I was crazy when I was running around the house and pacing all night but the pain is so bad it's not painful but it is. Very hard to explain when you haven't had it and all you can do is talk about it.

  33. I have suffered from Hell's itch several times in my 45 years. The earliest happening when I was 22 and the latest happening four years ago.

I sympathize with everyone that has ever suffered from this. None of the above descriptions truly define the absolute torture caused by this itch. Worse yet, it seems to happen sporadically and often with sunburns that don't seem that bad. After my last bout, I no longer expose my chest or back to the sun cause it is just not worth it.

I am posting here because there is one treatment I would like to add to the above mix, and that is Gold Bond Anti-itch Lotion (the stronger, the better). It has helped me greatly in the past. It is not potent enough to cause complete relief by itself, but it does help greatly.

There was also one time that I was suffering so much from an attack I drank myself to sleep, which worked like a charm! However, I do not think this is the safest or wisest course of action.

To anyone that is suffering from this, I offer my sympathy and wish you a quick recovery.

  34. Today was my first time dealing with this, after having too many Bud Lights on the 4th and forgetting to reapply my sunblock. It started out of nowhere earlier and I have family who deal with this so I knew right away I was in for a tough few days. I made the mistake of drenching myself in aloe and coconut water, and also tried a shower. I finally got some Benadryl, wrapped myself in a drenched towel and was able to fall asleep. When I woke up it was back in full effect. I had to call out of work and my boss thinks I'm trying to pull a fast one on him. You really don't know how bad this can be until it happens to you. I wouldn't wish this kind of torment on my worst enemy.

Hopefully I can go back to my normal routine tomorrow.

Good luck everyone, may the odds be ever in your favor.

  35. Benadryl extra strength spray worked wonders for me. The first 5 minutes after it went on we're terrible. The itch became 100 times worse to the point I was biting down hard on a towel going mad. After that the itch disappeared and didn't come back. I kept re-applying the spray every 3-4 hours and it didn't come back. That plus the 3 anti histamine tablets earlier in the day seemed to finally work.

The first time I expirinced the hells itch I didn't know what to do I didn't even know it existed but I got through and just this past weekend i unfortunately got it again still not knowing why it does it but I decided to do a little recearch after I had my wife put on cocoa butter lotion I thought my skin was on fire but after about 10-15 minutes it stopped and so did the itching the itching was gone for about a day and half and then came back tonight so put on more cocoa butter and took a Benadryl and it's still somewhat itchy but it's bearable so for me cocoa butter actually helped me

  37. I am currently experiencing this. It's so insane! I'm 26 weeks pregnant, so I can't take ibuprofen. I can take some benedryl and will try that. In the meantime, all the things that made it worse or didn't help: aloe, benedryl cream, mayonnaise, vinegar water, itching it. Then we made an oatmeal bath - not too hot as I can't take a hot bath, being pregnant. It's really helping. Now I'm just afraid to get out of the bath!

  38. My husband is experiencing this right now. I have never seen him in so much pain. We had never heard of hell's itch before, so thank you to this blog and everyone who commented. A little while after dosing him up with ibuprofen and antihistamines he was able to lay down on his back (where the itch is) and at least rest. Having his back pressed up against our duvet seems to be helping so maybe the towel doesn't necessarily have to be wet? He was screaming and running up and down our street till i found this page! Anybody who has suffered from this has my sincerest sympathy

  40. I'm Portuguese and it's 01:49AM, and I can't sleep because of this horrible itch.
I tried meds, lotions... the worst thing is that every medication/lotion people recommend, we don't have it here! So I really don't know what to do. The itch on my back, shoulders and the back of my legs are making me insane and I can't just rest. I thought of taking the hot shower but my skin is so sensitive i really don't want to make the sunburn worse again since I'm finally recovering. I'm in the verge of tears and I just wish to sleep and this itch just won't disappear. It's my second day of this madness and I'm on my way to the third day. I just want this to be gone.
My parents think I'm overreacting but I'm so glad I'm not the only one who's going through this. They have no idea how unbearable this is. I just wish that someone would rip all of my back or knock me out so I could finally sleep...

    1. PURE PEPPERMINT OIL WORKS!! Forget spending a crazy amount of money on a er or a Dr visit and getting a expensive prescription, or any other over the counter medicine. Everything I have read from people trying different things they say it either doesn't work very good, if at all, or they say it worked for a little bit or had to keep reapplying it. Save the money, go to a health store or even walgreens or Wal-Mart and get a $5-7 bottle of the peppermint essential oil. This truly works!! My son had hells itch 2 years ago. I had him do a hot scalding shower, when he was done showering, I rubbed the undiluted peppermint oil on his back and he was instantly calm. The oil has a cooling effect, normally you wouldn't use it undiluted but for this itch, would definitely recommend it. Make sure to wash your hands after and not touch the area by your eyes. I had him put a light shirt on, so his skin wouldn't dry out and didn't have an itch the rest of the day. After that, now anytime my son will be away home for a couple of days with a chance of getting sunburn, he always remembers to pack a bottle of peppermint oil, just in case!! I have read other reviews on peppermint oil for hells itch and they all say basically the same, it just works!!

  43. I have had this a few times in my 37 years and now again for not applying suncream at the beach. It usually happens around day 2/3 for me when the skin is finally beginning to renew and the tight skin is softening up a bit. My advice is take a 3-4 hour lukewarm bath with a half cup of apple cider vinegar , half a pack of organic porridge oats blended to a fine powder and about 40 tea bags. I just added some cucumber slices and tomatoes for good measure this time. oats is kind to skin , softens and sooths it , tea is a natural anti-oxidant , a.c.v draws out impurities and helps to heal too. In the last hour before you get out , take an anti inflamatory pain killer or 3 and 2 antihistamine tablets. Pat dry, do not apply anything as everything reacts with your very tender and sensitive skin at this time. Hop under a warm duvet and all should be reasonably good. This is the worst itch you can ever have and will drive you demented unless you take action. I say it every time but this time i mean it, NEVER AGAIN. Sunscreen all the way..

  44. It has been so long since I got a sunburn that I forgot about the itching. In a move of desperation, I filled the bathtub with hot water and plopped down into it, still almost crying.
It works. It's probably really not a good idea and it did hurt a little, but the hurt was soon washed away by the fact that I do not itch anymore. I do not recommend hot showers, but a hot bath you can carefully lower yourself into?

    Oh yes.

Also: I was at the point of incoherence where you might gladly take a knife to the heart to make the itching stop. I'll have better ideas on how to deal in the future, but it was so awful.

  46. Thank you for sharing everyone!

I got my sunburn from a tanning bed.. I wasn't aware that it was a "hot bed" meaning people had been using it right before I went in it.. Let me tell you I was burnt to a crisp, front and back from my neck down to the tops of my calves, however, no blistering.. That was Friday evening, Friday night I dealt with severe chills and my body feeling like it was lit of fire. Saturday and Sunday were excruciating painful with sensations of my body again being on fire and not being able to wear clothing or sit or lay due to material being against my skin.

Monday evening is when the "Devil's Itch" took course and oh my goodness I have never dealt with anything so excruciatingly painful and itchy, I would rather die that deal with the pain.. I called tele-health because I thought I was loosing my mind and did my research on-line in the few moments between the waves of "fire ants" in my skin. Thank God my husband was with me and remained calm even though inside he was totally freaking out! He drove me to Shoppers Drug Mart, after the tele-health nurse recommended I get a antihistamine, it did relieve the itching. It worked and was the only thing that worked for me, however, I am now off to the clinic to maybe get something stronger, as I am maxing out on the recommended dose and I am still extremely uncomfortable. Throughout all my research it can last between a couple hours to 48hours, it has been explained that a prescription should be last resort, along with the hot shower, based on the fact that the hot shower only cures the itch because you are re-scalding your nerve endings which is triggering your brain that you have a more severe symptom to worry about, so I would not recommend a hot shower because it's going to hurt like hell and only provide temporary relief! Also, a doctor's prescription medication that will soothe this actually makes your immune systems super low, which could be detrimental if you suffer from other illnesses or diseases. For me, I am hoping that it will help to get me through this!!

Wish me luck and I'm sending healing vibes to all of you and anyone currently going through this!

  47. Having it right now. It started a hour and half ago, firstly as a just everyday itch, and in about 5 minutes i was cramping crawling in itch/pain. Its my first time dealin with it. I got sunburnt very badly on my stomach and chest. What is really helping me now is a ice-pack wrapped in a towel. I've took a brufen 15 min ago and I hope it will kick in and help. So for me the cold towel ice pack took the pain from the crawling agony 100% to a really managable pain of 30%. I hope this helps! Btw, im writing this with one hand since im holdin the ice pack on my chest and it took me 25 minutes :)

  48. I got sunburned pretty badly from staying 15minutes in the sun on the beach at 11 am. I live on the beach coast, so it s not the first time to get a sunburn, but it's the first time I have hell's itch. i kicked in right after i got out of the shower about 48h after the sunburn appeared. The first 2h were bearable, the itch/pain was strong. I pun on some aftersun cream and then a lotion called nidoflor, it didn't help right away. After that i started searching on the internet for solutions. I stopped itching myself and this helped a lot. After that I put on some wet and cold cloths in the burn which also took the itch away, but not totally. After about 1h30mn i started itching without noticing and the itch got A LOT worse and painful. I couldnt stop itching because it was so bad but I tried following the same steps using the nidoflor than wet cloth and it worked, I was able to fall asleep. Now is day two and I'm waintin for the itch to apear, but today I am prepared with benadryl and claritine

  49. I have it but mine is a little different. It started 2 days after my sunburn peeled which was 2 weeks AFTER I was burned. It wasn't even a bad burn as I've been burned worse in my life yet have never experienced this. The itch has lasted about 4 days so far and seems to be worse at night. I'm ready to grab a cheese grater from the kitchen and remove the skin from my shoulders to stop the itch. The only thing that has helped so far is ice packs on my shoulders. I have taken an antihistamine for the first time and will pray for relief.

  50. I'd like to share my experience as well. I just finished up getting through this two days ago with sunburn on my shoulders. Worst thing in the world. During the flair-ups, I was either pacing and panting uncontrollably, or balled up on the floor crying, shaking, and pounding my head into the carpet (not something that I usually do, btw). I've tried to describe the "psychological effects" to others, but it is impossible. The sensation is like a combination of hundreds of fire ants or hornets crawling madly and biting under your skin, along with the most intense itching beyond what you could imagine, along with..... heat that feels like someone is taking a blowtorch to your affected area. You will literally try to think of ways to make yourself go unconscious.

These flair-ups, or "episodes" lasted for 30-40 minutes each time, and by the time they calmed down, I was emotionally and physically exhausted. I tried lidocaine spray, aloe, vicks, and even peppermint oil. They ALL made it much worse.

This starts almost exactly 48 hours after a sunburn apparently, as did mine, and only effects about 1-5% of people I hear. I'm a bigger guy (6'1'' / 280lbs) so I decided to take a double dose of 4 Benadryl / 100mg total at a time, along with 3 ibuprofens / 600 mg total, and repeat about every 4 hours. Benadryl label says 2 pills every 4-6 hours, but for me, the Benadryl took nearly two hours to kick in, so I repeated this regiment every 4 hours.

After a few doses and doing better, I decreased the Benadryl to 3 pills. You will be EXTREMELY sleepy and unable to drive safely, or attend work / school for a day or two. You may also experience some diarrhea from the Benadryl, so drink alot of water. Sleep will be your friend in time of trouble.

I went to an urgent care center, and the doctor simply didn't understand, despite me explaining, and saying that I looked it up online (and told her I knew she probably hated to hear that lol). She dismissed it as simple sunburn and gave me a prescription of 50mg of Prednizone pills to "help with the swelling". Based on other things I've been reading, I suspect that these Prednizone pills may also be helping me, so I would recommend this to others as well. As directed, you will want to take food with Prednizone, which I did, and I had not issues at all with upset stomach, etc, and was fine.

To also help through the worst of the flair-ups, thanks to the internet and people sharing their experiences, I would take an extremely hot shower. It hurts, but it takes the itching / crawling sensation out of the mix temporarily. A hot blow dryer will also help when you can't be in the shower. This sounds horrible, but I would also press my fingernails VERY hard into my shoulders (where my pain was) on and off about 1 second on, 1 second off. Again, painful, but helped with the itching / crawling sensation during the episodes a bit.

Mine started almost exactly 48 hours after getting the sunburn, and I ended up with about 5 episodes spread out over a 14 hour period, which was undoubtedly shortened due to the heavy Benadryl, Ibuprofen, and Prednizone.

I really hope this info is helpful to anyone who needs it. This is horrible, and I hope you feel better soon.

    1. EDIT:

The consensus seems to be that the only "risk-free" remedies are extremely hot showers (and/or blow dryers) for immediate temporary relieve, heating pads or very hot towels, and Benadryl and Ibuprofen.

Many have reported Pepperment Oil helping, some have reported Vic vaporub, but beware....some people have also reported these things making it worse. That being said, feel free to try these, but only if you have a hot shower and mild soap close in case it makes it worse.

It's been a couple of days, and there have still been some residual times of itches that seems to come on. Makes my heart race a little in fear it's starting to come back big time, so I've been taking 2 Benadryl (the recommended dose, now) once or twice a day as I feel some itching just to be safe. Seems to be doing the trick without putting me completely to sleep.

  51. Quinn you are a life saver. I tried a cold shower and banana boat aloe which only made things worse.

I took 3 benadryl, 2 ibuprofen and 2 paracetamol. Then I used a low heat on the hairdryer to minic the effects of a hot shower.

A tip I would suggest is putting on a light cotton t shirt and hoodie to help retain the heat.

  53. Firstly I'd like to thank everyone who posted on this with a solution you helped me a huge amount, the pain is horrible. I had devils itch recently after a 4 hour spell in the sun without any sun cream on. It started off as very bad sunburn but nothing too painful 2 days later it felt abit itchy, I decided to put aftersun on and it became very uncomfortable, then I put Sudocrem on to soothe the itch but then it became virtually unbareable. I was pacing around shaking in pain, crawled up on the floor all sorts. I decided to have a shower to wash the cream off this just made it worse. I have broken ribs, fingers and ripped of toenails and this was by far one of the most agonising irritating pains I've ever had. I quickly looked online to seek advice and the first thing I read mentioned putting a soaked towel on your back. This helped slightly for about an hour but I was still in an awful lot of pain. I tried to block it out and couldn't so I carried on looking and came across someone suggesting HOT SHOWERS, this sounds ludacris but for me it was AN ABSOLUTE GODSEND!!! I had a 10 minute super hot shower concentrating on my back (where the itch was) the itch then subsided and I then stepped out and started timing how long it lasted until the itch because unbareable again. In 3 hours I had another and then again 4 hours later. I had a final one before bed and tried some diluted teatree oil then calamine solution. This didn't help as much as I'd hoped and so had to have yet another shower before bed to wash the solution off. Here I am the following day in a car for the next 3 hours and it's more or less fine. I have also been taking anti histamines every 4-6 hours which helped a lot and ibuprofen!

KEY MESSAGE - IT WILL SUBSIDE TAKE HOT SHOWERS AND TIME HOW LONG IT TAKES TO COME BACK, FOR ME IT WAS A MENTAL THING TO KNOW ITS GETTING BETTER!

would have liked to try peppermint mint oil but didn't have any to hand so couldnt however I will take somewith me in the future on holidays.

I have been reapplying every 30 min so far out of fear but it seems to have calmed. I also took some naproxen this am but was still badly itching. I really think this sarna may provide needed relief. I had to buy at a pharmacy store but it is otc.

  56. I need to share my solution. I've been tru hell and back with this "issue". DO NOT shower. Try not to sweat. Stay calm in a/c (your car i.e.). And the solution for me is: lightly whip one o two egg whites (NOT the yolks). Apply it in the itching zones trying to cover very well the sunburned areas. Let it to dry in a cool fresh environment. Open a beer o an iced tea and relax for the first 5 minutes and then enjoy the healing. It took me more than 30 years to discover it, after trying expensive moisturizing creams, oily stuffs, honey, mud, starch, vinegar, even toothpaste, Jesus knows... In this pretty moment I'm near my Hell's Itch attack, but not so nervous. If it doesnt work for you, try xylocaine/lidocaine in spray (the same used in dental services). Hope you to heal soon. Stay in the shade and always use sunscreen 30+

  58. I moved to Hawaii for college and really badly sun burnt my stomach. A couple days later I jumped the shower before bed and thats when the itch began. Its one of the most painful things I have ever experienced. I was dying from the pain and put on aloe, cortisone cream, numbing spray, took Advil, they all made the pain much worse. I suffered for two hours before I decided to try taking a steaming hot shower. the pain went away!!!! so TAKE A HOT SHOWER IMMEDIATELY the pain was gone instantly and while it still tingled, it had really subsided. don't shower after that and just keep a cool towel on it.

  59. So this is the third time I've had hell's itch and found myself back at this blog frantically trying to scan through the comments for a new remedy that would keep me from wanting to run full speed into a brick wall. Also the third time I idiotically thought I'd go for the tanning bed in the dead of winter.
Which is when I had this thought:
It's the dead of winter, yeah, but I live in Florida, and was recently on holiday over Christmas in Miami where I got a decent burn and did not get this f***** of an itch afterward, like so many other times I've been fried and still avoided this curse.
So, this is my theory. There is more than one type of UV ray. There is ultraviolet alpha, the longer of the 2 rays that is pretty consistent anywhere and anytime. Then we have uv beta, which varies in intensity by the time of year and location.
Reading through these posts, I notice the majority of us were either in the sun on vacation, AKA somewhere other than where were used to the uv on a day to day basis, somewhere with uvb rays possibly more strong due to season or location, OR PERHAPS LIKE MY DUMB A**, IN THE TANNING BED WITH A NICE UNNATURAL COMBO OF UVA AND UVB. I 100% hate myself for doing this to myself again, but at least now I think I know the causative agent. UVB hyperphotosensitivty is what I'll call it.
I know symptom wise, this doesn't help, but like so many others before have suggested, stick with the ibuprofen (or hydrocodone if you have an RX laying around, seriously, the stronger the better :/ ) and antihistamine, but if you're lucky enough to have a prescription painkiller, go light on the Benadryl to be safe. Avoid the creams like others say, they'll just make you want to claw your skin off even more. Also pro tip, sleeping pills won't work, you won't fall asleep, the itch won't subside, and you'll start hallucinating on top of that (literal worst experience of our lives, right?)
Bottom line, this will drive you crazy 8-36 hours, but then hopefully you'll stop itching, and wear sunscreen next time you go on vacation in the sun, or learn to avoid the tanning bed at all costs. Good luck to anyone going through this right now, you're not crazy even though most physicians will try to tell you that's your problem. You can probably see multiple nurses and health care workers have gone through this and posted their experience above and are clearly not crazy, and I'm a clinical scientist that's definitely itching like a b****, but not crazy either, although I may be soon if this Benadryl doesn't work soon.

  60. Suffering now. Itch began 48 hours after sun exposure. Put sunscreen on front, but 5 year old anxious to go to the pool so i figured is get my husband to put it on my back at the pool.Distracted with the child i forgot about my back. This wss my first sun of the season. After pool i had 2 hours of tennis with a pro who faced the sun so my back was in the sun. This morning the itch began, couldn't finish dressing, I have allergies so i know not to scratch. Rolled on the floor, hit my head on the carpet, kicked, screamed, hit myself, anything to stop what felt like fire ants, hornets and glass shards having skin ruptured from my back, shoulders, back of arms. Googled sunburn itch... took awhile because i had such an involuntary twitch i couldn't spell on my phone and my voice was untrcognizhable. Thank God for internet, found Hell's itch. Took double dose of Allegra and clarinex. Tried cortisone cream,
Aloe with lidocaine, my daughter put a baking soda paste. Nothing helped the paste felt like more glass shards. Spoke with nurse in my Dr office. My voice told her the pain was intense. I tweaked a poll i took years ago for itch that knocked me out. Atarax. Dr. called in steroids, Atarax, Gabapentin, Lifocaine cream.the last 2 came up on the internet and i have a great Dr who was willing to do anything to help. He also called in codeine. I couldn't go to the Dr pour urgent care because i couldn't stop twitching, kicking, rolling, crying or get dressed. Husband finally put of meeting and went to pharmacy. Pharmacist said no drug interactions, to take everything on top of the antihistamines I took 2 codeine pills, 1 Atarax, 1 Gabapentin. Drugstore didn't have 10% lidocream, only 5%. My daughter put that on thickly so it would numb the skin. She also made me a fresh blood orange mimosa. After an hour hour so... about 6 or 7 hours from the onset, I was still tingly but the pain was down enough that the drowsiness from all the medications started to give me that peaceful druggy feeling you get from iv Demerol.I wss ready to be totally knocked out since it started so this was a relief.I passed pout on my stomach for almost 5 hours. Now awake with itching but repeating what i did earlier. I'm taking so much stuff I don't know if out is any one or the combination. This is worse than childbirth or broken bones. My appendix burst once and i passed out from the pain... that's the closest I've cine took this pain. I felt like I'd lose my sanity and just wanted someone to knock me out. Am getting drowsy again hoping the sleep will mask the pain. BTW I've had worse sunburns but never had this happen before. I will forever coat myself in sunscreen before venturing outside. Praying for relief for myself and anyone suffering from this. The nearest thing I've ever seen to it was a man literally throwing himself against a wall screaming there were insects under his skin. I was in an ER. He was in a room with glass that was mirror inside but you could see in from outside. He was in heroin withdrawal. I says at the time, of everyone saw this, they'd never touch an illegal substance. If hell is even remotely like this itch we'd all do well to get right with God now and renew hourly. I cannot begun to describe endless agony and pain, gnashing of teeth, etc. At least on this site of death there's passing out and sleep, not so after death. I missed ashes today because of this. . it's Ash Wednesday. I'm a true believer but I'm definitely upping my religious life after this.

  61. I am currently suffering from, and have suffered from Hell's itch probably ten times in my life. I'm as fair skinned as they come, but I can tan if I burn lightly. Ladies and gentlemen, that was my mistake. It's never worth it. Ever. Nothing like the misery of Hell's itch to make you truly regret your decision. The only way I get through it now is to convince myself that I deserve it. I know this agony, I know that these are the worst 48 hours of my existence, yet here I am, enduring them again. It's just not worth it folks. For those who are unaware until it is too late, my sympathies. My great advice is to learn.
    Now for remedies...
My greatest remedy is this: don't do nothing! Hell's itch can drive you mad, truly, but only if you let it. I do anything possible to get my mind off of it. You distract yourself, you'll be better off. I'm currently down in Brazil training to play sand volleyball professionally. I burned the fuck out of my entire back. Despite that, when the itch started like I knew it would today, I went and trained for 3 hours. It works. Sure it's uncomfortable, but I don't think about it when I'm playing and that is the best relief possible. Get your mind off of it in any way you can. If you just sit and try to endure, you will find yourself at Hell's gate.
Listen to everything else people are saying on this forum for remedies and what not to use. It's accurate. Hot showers work great. Good luck and stay strong, my friends. The first night is the longest and worst. Sleep probably won't come, but time heals all. It does not last forever.

Also a cold towel that’s been in the fridge helps a little, but for me it’s been a mental thing. You just have to distract your self and the pain does go away. I hope no one ever has to go what we have to. Hope you guys find remedies that work for you!

Not sure if this has been brought to attention yet but going to trow this out there because this idiot gets it at least once a year and I always say I'll never get sunburn again but here I am again itchy as hell. About 8 years ago a man that I worked with whom was also in the Navy said the only ointment they ever carried with them when stationed in the dessert was yup that's right PREPERATION H with aloe. Well the very next sunburn I had after that conversation I thought I will do anything but put ass cream all over my back. After buying ever sunburn cream under the sun I was finally so fed up with it I grabbed a tube squeezed it all over the wall and smashed my back into it. I promise u promise u that about 5 to 10 min of ass cream smeared on your back you will never grab anything else again to relieve your sunburn itch.

  67. Got a really bad sunburn while I was on vacation in Hawaii. It happened to me about 48 hours later. This Hell's Itch is the worst thing I've ever experienced in my life. It's more of a mental pain than anything, the feeling a deep itch on your back and shoulders but you can never scratch it. It drove me crazy, to the point of curling up into a fucking ball on the floor. I quickly rushed to Google which took me to this site. I tried literally everything this site had to offer. The Towel, the peppermint oil, the blowdryer, A&D oil, literally everything. The best thing ever was a very hot shower. Holy shit the shower feels so damn good. I took a shower almost every hour to escape the pain. You start to just to sleep so bad. I went almost a full day without sleep, but it won't let you. My GF went out to get me a shit ton of stuff. I read you need to get antihistamines so Benadryl and Allegra. I took like three Benadryl and one Allegra. Two hours later still nothing, I'm like wtf do I have to do to go to sleep. I resorted to Nyquil to knock my ass out. I woke about six hours later and felt like a new man. It came and went and it was a fucking blessing to feel free again. I had to call out of work the next day cause I couldn't imagine working like this. To anybody out there that is going through this, don't be afraid to use your shower like seriously I'm talking 15-20 min showers. Take some Benadryl and Allegra you need to be knocked out. When you wake up everything should be better, you might feel a little itch every now and then but its gone for the most part. Good luck to anybody out there

  68. I’ve had this a few times in my life. I’m the type of person who doesn’t burn if I have sunscreen on outside. Last year, I started laying in the tanning bed because I wanted to look tan for graduation. I wouldn’t even get sunburned in the bed but would still itch like crazy! I thought it was a heat rash up until I started back at the tanning bed again and tried googling my symptoms again. I haven’t tried Benadryl yet, I’m about to, but the first time I had it, I would put on aloe and then turn my ceiling fan on. It would numb/cool my skin and let me think about something else or finally fall asleep.

  69. I've had it twice, and it's brutal. Today, my son had it after a burn two days ago. What worked for him, at this point, was the hot shower. He was writhing on the floor in agony for almost three hours, but now he's comfortably up and walking around. My wife is on the way to the drug store to get some Benadryl, and he's ready to hop back in the shower if the symptoms reappear. Hopefully, he's past it. ... because it. is. brutal.

  70. Okay my turn to tell my experience.
I decided to go ahead and go to the pool with my father and his girlfriend yesterday for about two hours. I decided against putting on sunscreen due to me being pale. (I'm pale because I don't go into the sun that much)
Now I showered after we got home and no issue.
Today I go into the shower and no issue. I took a nice long warm shower, oh man it was like I was in Heaven! But then I got out and fell down to Hell where I contracted a terrible blight.
I first started by putting on medicinal Aloe, for a brief second I thought I was safe, then my hopes were dashed. So I hopped into the shower to get it off and took a nice long cold shower.
Got out and it was fine so I walked away.
any time the itches started I put a towel on them because it was fine when I was drying. That helped me get to my room and find this.
Dude, on a bro level thanks for the help.

  71. My husband just experienced this, I thought he was going crazy. I read this article and gave him Benadryl and ibuprophen, thankfully I read through the comments about TIN FOIL also, we were willing to try anything with the amount of discomfort he was in, and it worked wonders!!! Try TIN FOIL, it brought relief to him in seconds!!!!!! Reflective side should be put face down against the burn/itch.

  76. I have it right now, second time in 4 years. It's crazy!!! The worst itching I've ever experienced in my life!!! It started with just the usual minor itching associated with sunburn. Then after lunch, without warning, it started itching more and more and within 5 minutes it was hell!...Literally... tried the usual vinegar and water spray 50/50--it didn't work this time. I jumped in the shower initially hot (I'd rather have pain than the extreme itching). I used the Dermoplast (with the red cap) which did work the time previously but not this time!!! I had my wife to give me 5 25mg benadryl pills. Then 5 minutes later I took 10 more, totaling 15. While I was waiting for that to kick in, my wife brought me a steroid cream that my kids use on rare occasion for excema. still had an itch although slightly better. I tried a hair dryer on my shoulders and chest, this took the itch away immediately. It will last about 10 - 15 minutes before needing to use the hair dryer again. I feel the benadryl starting to kick in as I'm feeling a little tired. I usually try not to take more than 500mg of benadryl because I'll start hallucinating a little bit at that point. I also read that NSAID's will help so I took 2 aleve's. At this moment it's back to a normally sunburn itch...but I'm anxious about what will happen again in a few hours....I wish there was a quick fix for this...

  77. This is honestly the worst pain I've ever had!I've broken multiple bones and no broken bone compared to this! Mine luckily lasted about 36 hours. I tried tylenol, alieve, antihistamines, cold compresses and nothing got rid of the itch and pain beside a hot shower. Do nooot apply aleovera at all! Good luck to those who have it!

  78. 17 and getting this itch for the first time. im currently wrapped up in a wet towel sitting at my desk, i can see why its called suicide itch.

  79. 35 and got my first bout! No pain just damn annoying iterating tingly itches that drive me insane! Had a cool bath, 2 antihistamines and 2 ibuprofens along with a cold wet towel and has done the trick for now. I was ready to punch holes in walls or break my hands doing attempting to. Don’t think I can cope if it flares up again

  80. My God this helped. Sat in my kitchen eating ibuprofen and with the fan for a out eight hours, seems to have helped. Would have killed self, thw pain!

  81. I have had hells itch a handful of times. The first time I had this I could barely function. After some trial and error I have figured out how to relieve the itch, leaving me with just sunburn pain which I will gladly take vs the itch .

    Couple tips:

    - Hydroxyzine HCL works wonders. This is a prescription antihistamine used to treat itching brought on by allergic reactions. This has been a game changer.
    - Drink 12-16 glasses of water a day
    - ibuprofen

Hot showers do work but it’s short/temporary relief. Also in order to get relief the shower needs to be scalding hot. Not a doctor but have to imagine that is doing additional damage to your skin.

  82. I have hells hell currently and this story really helped...I popped a couple Advil and rubbing my back on a chair...not the best thing to do but it's helping I think rn...I'm about to take some Benadryl take a really hot shower and fall asleep as fast as possible and wake up and take another shower and repeat til it all goes away...this story really hepled and thank you

  83. had hells itch once before this time when I was nine I'm 19 now and I live with my girlfriend. My friend passed away and we were having a memorial day for him doing some redneck stuff because he was the biggest one we knew and that's what he would've wanted. I just moved back to Florida I was like okay I can be shirtless without sunscreen cuz yah know it hasn't bother me for like 10 years. 8 hours later in the hot sun I was burnt beyond belief. The sun burn pain wasn't nothing compared to what happened two days later I woke up 10 am screaming and begging for it to stop my girlfriend woke up freaking out she's never seen me in pain or cry before so she was scared out of her mind there was literally nothing I could do but scream and run around the house naked. I found this site after it calmed for a little bit and you are all a godsend you helped so much the first night was terrible I couldn't find sleep if it hit me in the face the second day wasn't as bad but still pretty terrible by then I had taken so much benadryl and valium that I feel sleep on my balcony and in the oatmeal bath I couldn't hold my eyes opened anymore and I slept it the rest if the way off. The trick is guys just to tell yourself it's only a little bit longer. It's all a mental thing. The biggest thing that helped me though was a hot Aveeno oatmeal bath. It worked wonders!

  84. This is my second experience for the second summer in a row. My god its terrible. You think I’d learn. I was at work all day and luckily the torture started a little after i got home. Felt like i was laying on pins and needles. I truely believe i went crazy for the hour i never want to relive. I almost ripped my hair out. I tried aloe, nope. Cortizone, nope. NUMBING CREAM, nope. Cold shower, nope. Washcloth, nope. Swearing at random objects in my room, nope. Luckily i found some Benadryl rub for burns and rashes (Thanks mom) and the itching went away 95% within 10 minuets. The light tingling that followed i was able to soothe with just running my fingers over it(not scratching). Now that i know I’ll always have some on hand BEFORE i need it again

  86. This is the second year I have gotten Hells Itch, AKA suicide Itch, AKA Satan's Itch. I had three major back surgeries in high school that to this day I have random dies of unimaginable pain but this itch makes me pray for the back pain instead. It is very well named and is a living nightmare that you the reader are probably going through right now like myself. What works for me is, A&D ointment just carefully put it on. If you scratch this itch you will make it worse. Benadryl, Drinking Gatorade and believe it or not Peppermint oil. I do not ever get behind essential oils and home remidie garbage but this will seriously help. So use either the oil or A&D but it works. But for the love of God DO NOT USE ANY AFTER SUN SKIN CARE PRODUCTS. Do not use Sun bum, any sort of aloe or lotion or numbing cream. I am telling you now it will make it a million times worse. Yes seriously do not do it. If you have sent your significant other or parent out to buy the items I mentioned, while you are waiting take a hot shower. I know what you are thinking, hot shower on a sunburn but it will help you alot until they get back with the goods.

  87. I've got this now! For some reason I found having a hot shower, applied after sun to moisturise (with NO aloe vera), and once that's soaked in to then apply a sunburn relief like soleve, which has ibuprofen and isopropyl myristate. I don't know why but works for me. I tried loads... Cold shower, aloe Vera (do not try), coconut oil (made worse), and calamine lotion (whatever you do, don't try this one!). They were all rubbish. It hasn't fully gone but hoping I can sleep! It's really is horrible

  88. I had this horrible, agonizing itch for almost two weeks after a dreadful sunburn from doing yard work. It was all over my back, and felt like a hundred bugs biting you underneath your skin, to say the least. After looking in here and trying anything to quell the itch in the two weeks I had it, I found the following to work:

benedryl (6 a day- keep it going as you’re trying to subside the antihistamines as much as possible...)
    600+ Mg ibuprofen
    LIFE SAVER: hot compress!!!
I used a beanfilled bag that I heated up for 2-3 minutes in the microwave. I’m sure any heating pads would cWork, too. This is super important bc if a hot shower works for you, it’s like having a hot shower ALL the time. I don’t know why it works but it saved my when this was by far the worst I’ve ever had Hells Itch.
After days of the deep itching, the only thing that subsided the itch was a hot compress or heating pad. I will never go through it again without it.

I also agree that after a shower so NOT apply aloe Vera, it somehow makes everything worse! Benedryl cream also made it hurt 100x worse and thank his I fell asleep from the benedryl pills, because I will never touch the cream again personally.

  89. So god help I had gotten a bad sunburn from the springs in Florida and 2 days after I got the itch and now it's been going on for 12 with my only relief of taking 4 200mg ibuprofen so pain meds work wonders.

  90. Start taking Benadryl as soon as you think you've gotten a burn! That proactive approach has worked 99.9% the last two times I've experienced Hell's Itch. Prior to that, I've also gotten relief using hot tubs and heating pads. Hope this info is helpful to anyone suffering with Hell's Itch. Good luck!

  91. I used a anti-itch lotion, External Analgesic called Clear Anti-itch by Medic. It has lasted about 3 hours making the itch very tolerable, active ingredient, Pramoxine HCL 1% and Zinc Acetate 0.1% no other drugs taken

  92. The hot shower really does work! I didn't think it would, but it did. I'm going to go pick up Benadryl now, and hopefully that will help as well. Thanks so much for the recommendation! I get Hell's Itch EVERY TIME I get a sunburn. It's the actual worst. I never would have thought to try a hot shower. I feel so much better now.

  93. Yup, hot shower, benadryl, aspirin, and a heating pad on my back have helped immensely. The only downside is the drowsiness form the benadryl. Hopefully this will actually help keep the worst of it at bay for next day or so.

  94. Thank everyone who posted their tips and remidies. The pain was brutally mind breaking. I made the mistake of putting aloe cream on it and it took it to a new level.
    Here's what helps me.
First a hot, scalding hot shower.
    Then ib profin and benadryl
After that I took a heating pad that has and automatic shutoff after two hours and put it on my back and shoulders. Make sure it has the automatic shutoff because you will fall asleep when the benadryl kicks in. This is how I made it through and it helped greatly.

  95. I've had this 4 or 5 times absolutely unbearable. the only thing I found that works for me is a very hot shower as hot as I can bear. any cream like after sun ect makes it worse.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I have gone through this about 6 years ago and I agree it drives you mad I did the worst possible and started scratching the itch as it was absolutely unbareable.... And it kept getting worse and worse, to the point I was driven insane... Smashing my head into solid items to attempt to knock myself out to avoid the itch. U successful ended up going to a hospital to get cosine.....

Now 6 years later it's back today Infact..... As I am typing this I have a cold damp cloth on my upper back and shoulders drinking ass loads of water doing whatever to avoid thinking about my back.....

  97. First off, thank you to Quinn for posting this. I thought I was nuts - I had a mild sunburn two days ago, and it didn't even hurt. But today, OH. MY. GOSH. You can sit there telling yourself that "it's just a little sunburn, you big baby!" but it doesn't help the agony. After popping 800mg Ibuprofen and 50mg Benadryl and waiting an agonizing 45 minutes for them to "kick in," I tried calling Teladoc. He suggested I try aloe vera and 4% lidocaine cream - boy, was THAT bad advice! I found that cold wet towels (REALLY cold wet towels - I had a bowl of ice water) provided pretty decent relief, but only for a minute at a time - as soon as the towel got just a little bit warm, the pain was right back with a vengeance. After standing in the bathtub with a bowl of ice water and a towel, and shivering for an hour, I came across this post. And enough of you convinced me to try the hot shower. I figured, "What the heck? If it doesn't work, I've got the icy towel right here." I still do not believe it - IT WORKED! Yeah, it was a little uncomfortable with the hot water on a sunburn, but for me, five minutes was enough. I put on a loose fitting shirt and wrapped a blanket around my shoulders, and NO CREAMS OR LOTIONS. That was an hour ago. NO PAIN or discomfort. (I'm thinking that the ibuprofen and benadryl probably helped, but they were not enough on their own.) From reading these posts, I may have to repeat this every couple of hours, but that is so totally worth it. Thanks to EVERYONE who has commented on this post. I would not have tried the hot shower without all the convincing you did - and that's what did the trick!

  98. My husband has hells itch right now. 48 hours after the sunburn. He started freaking out painful itching pins and needles. We were driving home from the beach... put aloe on and made it worse, washed off with water and shirt. Happened to have cortisone cream from having poison ivy( another story) put this on and it has calmed down for now....

  99. I had this and so happy to find this site. It was all over my chest. I didn’t do the hot shower I was scared to try it but I used a hot water bottle and just hugged that for 24hrs filling it up when I started to itch again....
